Englishman David de Rothschild has designed and built a plastic catamaran that consists of a bunch of plastic soda bottles.

And, he intends to sail his boat called Plastikik across the Pacific Ocean in a three-month voyage from San Francisco, California, in the United States, to Sydney, in Australia.

The Plastiki is made from 12,500 plastic bottles, along with other various recycled materials.

In particular, the 18-meter long, 11-ton boat has a hull built on thousands of two-liter plastic bottles. The bottles are filled with dry ice to increase the boat's buoyancy while out at sea.

The actual hull is built from recycled polyethylene terephthalate, along with an experimental plastic. And, its mast is made from a discarded aluminum irrigation pipe.

The two voyagers, who will operate the craft on the open sea, will generate electricity from solar panels and wind turbines, along with exercise bikes.

Page three concludes.
