The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius, both hybrid models, score in second and third place, respectively, in Euro NCAP’s list of safest cars for 2009.



Euro NCAP is an European organization that crash tests cars to see how safe they are to motoring consumers.

Some of the major categories in the 2009 test provided by Euro NCAP are (1) adult occupant protection, (2) child occupant protection, and (3) pedestrian protection.

The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius captured second and third places, respectively.

In the other five positions of the Euro NCAP list are: the Volkswagen Golf (in first place), the Hyundai i20 (in fourth place) and the Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and Opel/Vauxhall Astra (tied for fifth place).

The Volkswagen Golf was rated highest among the various cars for adult occupant protection, while the Toyota Avensis was rated highest for child occupant protection and the Toyota Prius was ranked highest for pedestrian protection.

The EuroNCAP.com’s website “Euro NCAP’s RECAP: 2009,” describes the results of their analysis of the safest cars in 2009.

The website of Euro NCAP states that it "... provides motoring consumers - both drivers and the automotive industry - with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe."
