Australia makes big step toward Zero Emission Communities

Science - Energy

CSIRO announced on Thursday, November 12, 2009, that its new Renewable Energy Integration Facility has opened. The scientific research agency of Australia stated that the facility is "A step towards zero emission communities."

The Renewable Energy Integration Facility (REIF) was opened within the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle, New South Wales.

CSIRO, short for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation is the national government body for scientific research in Austalia.

The CSIRO article states that the “… new CSIRO research centre [will] help transform Australian electricity networks and lower greenhouse gas emissions”.

The REIF will develop new grid management technologies to provide much better usability for renewable, low-emission energy resources into Australia’s electrical networks.

Besides bettering Australia’s power network, the new REIF will provide for better reliability in the supply of electricity around the country, along with reducing the number of power "blackouts."

At the official ceremony to open the A$1 million state-of-the-art facility, Sharon Grierson (MP Federal Member for Newcastle) provided the following statement:  “This project is yet another example of the important and valuable work happening at the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle to help Australia reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.”

Additional information about the new Renewable Energy Integration Facility is found on the 11/12/2009 CSIRO media release article “A step towards zero emission communities.”
