PHB was first sold, beginning in 1996, under the trade name Biopol by the Monsanto Company.

The rights to Biopol was sold to Metabolix in 2001, and the company began to produce it from bacteria.

However, this project failed in 2004. Since then, the primary focus of PHB for the small biotech company has been to grow it within plants.

In 2005, Metabolix received the “Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award" fro the development and commercialization of PHB.

The PHB is built into the leaves of switchgrass, which can be easily harvested and eventually used as a renewable fuel source and, in this case, as a non-petroleum based plastic.
