WA dominates Green PC competition

Science - Energy

System builders from Western Australia have made a major impact in a competition calling for the assembly of a Green PC. Despite WA being one of Australia's less populated states, it was home to almost half of the finalists, including the first and second place getters.

Sponsored by Western Digital and Gigabyte, the contest called upon any Australian-based PC builder (regardless of market segment) to produce a system that balanced performance and energy efficiency.

WA-based EDsys IT took the grand prize - a Toyota Prius.

"It was obvious that EDsys IT spent a lot of time thinking about the configuration of their system, and how to choose the right components to produce an efficient balance of PC power savings and performance. The team that put the system together deserves a huge pat on the back, as the understanding of power saving technologies, both software and hardware, really shined in the submission," said competition judge Nick Race, technical editor for Australian Personal Computer magazine.

"EDsys IT is also working toward ISO14001 environmental management standard compliance, which guides them to continually monitor and improve the effects of their company and products have on the environment. In addition, EDsys IT has undertaken an initiative to offset carbon emissions for the system they ship whereby the company will plant two native trees for each system they sell," he added.

Which other entrants made the finalists? Find out on page 2.
