The Australian researchers concluded (within their paper's abstract) that better understanding of bleaching and disease within corals should be undertaken in order to 'accurately determine the resilience of coral reefs.'
Dr. Palmer states within the article, 'Understanding the immune system of reef-building corals will help to reduce the impact of coral diseases and environmental stresses. Potentially, this will enable us to more accurately predict the vulnerability of coral reefs to disease and bleaching, before there are obvious signs of stress."
