The American Lung Association has released its tenth annual State Of The Air Report 2009 for the United States. What might surprise people is that two cities in Utah (whose logo is “Life Elevated”) have elevated pollution levels. Many other cities in many other U.S. states are even worse!
Yes, the usual large cities with dirty air are still included on the annual report, such as Los Angeles, California and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and some smaller cities, too, are listed, such as Bakersfield, California and Birmingham, Alabama.
However, some cities that most Americans wouldn’t think to have dirty air were also listed. One of the worst cities in the United States for short-term particle pollution (one of the three pollution categories) was Salt Lake City, Utah (ranked sixth nationally) and Logan, Utah, (ranked eighth nationally). Life Elevated.")
The three categories of pollution tested through the ALA report are (1) ozone, (2) short-term particles, and (3) year-round particles.
Los Angeles, California had the worst record for ozone, while Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was the worst for short-term particles and Bakersfield, California was the dirtiest with respect to year-round particles.
