Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
They state, for instance, that “For New York City, the rise due to ocean circulation changes amounts to 15, 20 and 21 cm [5.9, 7.9, and 8.3 inches] for scenarios with low, medium and high rates of emissions respectively, at a similar magnitude to expected global thermal expansion.” (underlined for comparison)
According to New Scientist (“Flood risk to US east coast”), “… for the worst case scenario of greenhouse gas emissions, the sea level rise due to AMOC slowdown on top of the thermal expansion of water could reach 52, 51 and 44 centimeters [20.5, 20.1 and 17.3 inches] around Boston, New York and Washington DC respectively by 2100.” [New Scientist, March 21-27, 2009, page 4]
New Scientist warns coastal New York state residents, “This would pose a particular threat to New York, as some parts are only 1.5 metres [59 inches] above sea level.”
Generally, they found, “… that a dynamic, regional rise in sea level is induced by a weakening meridional overturning circulation in the Atlantic Ocean, and superimposed on the global mean sea-level rise. We conclude that together, future changes in sea level and ocean circulation will have a greater effect on the heavily populated northeastern United States than estimated previously."[Abstract]
New Scientist quotes Stuart Cunningham (National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, U.K.). Dr. Cunningham states, “The modelling is highly credible.”
Learn more about the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) at this website, which contains an interview with Dr. Cunningham in September 2008 about a paper he had just published in the journal Science.
Cunningham states in the interview, "Knowledge on the state of the AMOC, and the ability to detect any sudden change,
holds immediate political and societal benefit as the world researches plans and
adapts to climate change."
And, "Abrupt changes in the AMOC have the potential to
offset some, if not all, of the projected warming for the 21st century.
Therefore, the ability to detect such change is vital so that the political and
societal adaptive strategy is in line with (i.e., appropriate to) the level of
expected warming."
