The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
An American-football-sized floating robotic probe (the Moulin Explorer) is also missing at sea.
The cylinder contains an accelerometer, a pressure transducer, an antenna, and a global positioning system (GPS) with a satellite modem link. The battery-powered, GPS-equipped probe has so far not communicated its position to the awaiting scientist.
Behar stated, "We did not hear a signal back so it probably got stuck under the ice somewhere. It was a bit of a long shot, but we thought it was worth a try. We've got to go back and scratch our heads and think about what we do next." [Scientific American]
Although the rubber duckies seem a bit primitive for NASA, Dr. Behar is developing a future generation of the Moulin Explorer, a more sophisticated probe that will be eventually sent to explore celestial bodies within the Solar System that scientists think also contain glacial oceans.
