Science - Climate

Prior to the 1990s, when it began to breakup, the Wilkins Ice Shelf covered around 6,000 square miles (16,000 square kilometers) of area, or about the size of Northern Ireland,.

According to the APF article, “In the past three decades, six Antarctic ice shelves have collapsed completely -- Prince Gustav Channel, Larsen Inlet, Larsen A, Larsen B, Wordie, Muller and the Jones Ice Shelf.”

A MSNBC slide show developed from images taken between May 30th and July 9th, 2008, of the “Antarctic ice shelf breaking up in dead of winter” is found on the MSNBC website.

Additional information is also included on the MSNBC website.

The ESA Earthnet website "Wilkins Ice Shelf hanging by its last thread" also provides a slide show of the event, along with providing additional information on the continuing saga of the Wilkins Ice Shelf.
