Australia begins to bury carbon dioxide

Science - Climate

The CO2CRC Otways Project, developed with the assistance of federal and state governments in Australia, will capture and compress carbon dioxide and place it into an underground reservoir located about 6,500 feet (about two kilometers) below the surface of the Earth.

The reservoir has sufficient volume to contain about 110,231 U.S. tons of carbon dioxide.

Before the project began (as a control measure) and during the project, researchers will monitor the stored carbon dioxide gas using various surface and sub-surface instruments.

The very informative website of the CO2CRC Otways Project is a 3 MB pdf file.

Another good website for information on the project is the Peter Cook’s “Demonstration of geological storage in Australia,” a 4.8 MB pdf file.
