The Aqua (EOS PM-1) satellite, headed by NASA, will help the scientists in their study of the Southern Ocean. (EOS stands for Earth Observing System.)

The multi-national scientific research satellite, launched on May 4, 2002 and in presently in orbit about the Earth, produces ocean color observations over the Southern Ocean every few days with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer.

In all, the satellite contains six instruments that measure the Earth’s atmosphere, land masses, oceans, and snow and ice cover.
