Research shows world violence is very costly

Science - Biology

According to research performed by the Institute of Economics and Peace, violence in the world in 2010 was very expensive, with a price tag of US$8.1 trillion. Find out the most violent country in the world in 2010, and the most peaceful one through its Global Peace Index.

Peace benefits the business climate of the world. Violence does not. According to the report by the Institute of Economics and Peace, violence (or, lack of peace) in the world 'affects the economy by trapping productivity and removing vital resources.'

According to the May 25, 2011 CBNC article 'Violence Cost World Economy $8.1 Trillion: Research,' when the world is forced to control violence it limits economic productivity by taking resources away from such productivity.

Steve Killelea, the executive chairperson of the IEP, stated, 'If you can improve the peace you can move these resources into other areas that then unleashes trapped productivity, which improves the economy.'

However, violence cost the world economy $8.1 trillion in 2010, according to the IEP report called the 2011 Global Peace Index.

Its front page states, 'The world is less peaceful for the third straight year and the Arab Spring heralds the biggest ever change in country rankings in this year's Global Peace Index (GPI).'

And, 'Iceland is the world's most peaceful nation and Libya tumbled a record 83 spots in rankings. Now in its fifth year, the GPI also shows the threat of terrorism increased in 29 countries.'

Page two concludes with the country found to be most violent in the world in 2010, and in 2009.
