Rules help children with ADHD do homework

Science - Biology

A New Jersey scientist has found that problems relating to homework and kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be solved with a few simple rules.

Dr. George Kapalka, an associate professor in the Department of Psychological Counseling at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, studied children with ADHD and their problems in doing homework.

His results will be presented at the 118th annual convention of the American Psychological Association which is being held during August 2010 in San Diego, California, U.S.A.

According to the WebMD article 'Structured Homework Strategy Helps ADHD Kids,' their are four simple rules to help children with ADHD perform better when doing homework.

These ADHD children, according to the WebMD article:

'¢    Showed their teacher their homework journal, in which everything was written down about assignments, before going home.

'¢    Were required to start homework within an hour after school dismissal time and to work in a quiet setting.

'¢    Were not allowed to watch television or play video games until homework was done.

'¢    Were not allowed to watch TV or use the computer for a day if they didn't bring home the journal or forgot anything for the day's homework assignments.
