Australian Catholics say yes to adult stem cell research

The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has provided a grant for a research study at the St. Vincent Institute of Medical Research for possible medical and therapeutic purposes of adult stem cells. It will be presented on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

 

A $100,000 grant has been awarded to Dr. Carl Walkley, a researcher at the St. Vincent Institute of Medical Research (St. Vincent's Institute), in Fitzroy, Victoria, a suburb of Melbourne.

The grant by the Catholic Church’s Archdiocese of Sydney is "… to support and foster research on the therapeutic potential of adult stem cells". [Sydney Morning Herald (3.16.2010): “Catholic Church funds stem cell research”]

The money, from the Sydney Archdiocese will be presented to Dr. Walkley on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

According to the March 17, 2010 IBT Health article Stem Cell Research To Be Funded by The Sydney Archdiocese, “Dr. Walkley has undertaken a project aimed at improving the success of transplanted adult stem cells in the redevelopment of blood formation in patients who are suffering from disorders such as the leukemia and cancer.”

Dr. Walkley responded, in the same IBT article, by saying, “… we have high hopes to find a way to increase the effectiveness of bone marrow transplants and cure blood disorders."
