Scientists who study elephants are joining together for a moratorium on legal ivory sales around the world. According to the lead scientist in the moratorium, illegal poaching of ivory causes the death of 8% of the elephant population each year.
U.S. conservation biologist Samuel "Sam" Wasser, from the University of Washington, is heading the call for the moratorium on legal ivory sales throughout the world.
He and other experts in the field feel that allowing legal ivory sales will only increase the amount of illegal poaching of ivory, which will cause further demise of elephants.
Dr. Wasser, an expert on non-invasive wildlife monitoring methods runs the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington. Wasser has been collecting data on ivory shipments with the use of DNA analysis.
His research points to the statistic: illegal poachers kill over 8% of the elephants in the world each year for their ivory tusks.
Let’s look at it from a human perspective. How would you like it if people (like you and your family and friends) were hunted down and killed for their teeth?
There has been, in the past, legal sales of ivory around the world. Currently there is an international agreement to ban sales of ivory.
That international ban could end temporarily if the countries of Zambia and Tanzania get their way. Please read on.
