Is your dog smarter than a two-year-old child?

Science - Biology

The smartest dogs, according to his study, are poodles, retrievers, border collies, German shepherds, and Doberman pinschers.

However, the dumbest dogs include bulldogs, chow chow, borzoi, and basenji. Coren found that the Afghan hound is the dumbest of all of the dogs he studied.

Dr. Coren commented on his research and the ability of dogs. "We all want insight into how our furry companions think, and we want to understand the silly, quirky and apparently irrational behaviors Lassie or Rover demonstrate.” [UPI: “Researcher: Dogs have IQ of human toddlers”]

He added, "Their stunning flashes of brilliance and creativity are reminders that they may not be Einsteins but are sure closer to humans than we thought.”

Dr. Coren presented the results of his study on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the 117th annual convention of the American Psychological Association (APA), which was held in Toronto, Canada on August 6-9, 2009.

On his website (http://www.stanleycoren.com/), Dr. Coren states, "Science may never comprehend the full extent of what dogs know about language, problem solving, the past, the future, God, time or philosophy. In the end, we must content ourselves with the fact that dogs know enough to be dogs -- which is all that is really required of them."

Dr. Coren has written numerous books on dogs. One of the most populare is “The Intelligence Of Dogs.” The TV show Good Dog! is based on Coren’s books about dogs. He also stars in the TV Show The Animal Attraction, which is a program of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and on the TV show Pet Central, which is shown on the Pet Network in Canada.
