And, it is not surprising that more men are in prison and jail, and on parole or probation when compared with women.
The ratio is one out of 18 men versus one out of 89 women.
The rates of correctional control are very distinct when it comes to race and geographical location.
Black adults make up 9.2%, or 1 in 11 of the people in correctional control.
Hispanic adults, however, only make up 3.7%, or 1 in 27 of the people.
White adults make up even less at 2.2%, or 1 in 45 people.
The report even states one especially problematic area in Michigan,
“The rates can be extremely high in certain neighborhoods. In one block-group of Detroit’s East Side, for example, 1 in 7 adult men (14.3 percent) is under correctional control.” [Pew: “
1 in 31 U.S. Adults are Behind Bars, on Parole or Probation”]
Adam Gelb, director of the Center’s Public Safety Performance Project (which produced the report), stated,
"Violent and career criminals need to be locked up, and for a long time. But our research shows that prisons are housing too many people who can be managed safely and held accountable in the community at far lower cost.” [Reuters U.K.: “
Cost of locking up Americans too high - Pew study”]
