Deadly mutated breast cancer gene discovered

Science - Biology

Specifically, eight copies of the MTDH gene was found to be in a segment of Chromosome 8 within humans with aggressive forms of breast tumors. People without breast cancer had only two copies of MTDH.

The scientists concluded, “Functional characterization of MTDH revealed its dual role in promoting metastatic seeding and enhancing chemoresistance. These findings establish MTDH as an important therapeutic target for simultaneously enhancing chemotherapy efficacy and reducing metastasis risk.”

Dr. Reiss, one of the authors of the study, stated, "Not only has a new metastasis gene been identified, but this also is one of a few such genes for which the exact mode of action has been elucidated."

He adds, "That gives us a real shot at developing a drug that will inhibit metastasis.” [Reuters UK (1-5-09): “Scientists find a gene that makes cancer spread”]

The discovery of the Reiss team could provide new treatments for breast cancer.

New medical drugs that block the MTDH gene could help prevent the spreading of cancerous tumors of the breast.

Such drugs could drastically reduce mortality from breast cancer in women.
