Who's in charge when in comes to sex, men or women? Depends!

Science - Biology

A study of people in 48 countries finds that attitudes with regards to sex, particularly one-night stands or committed relationships, depends on gender percentages. Read more to see what Bradley University professor David Schmitt found in his research of sexual human behavior.

David Schmitt, a psychology professor and department chair at Bradley University (Peoria, Illinois, U.S.A.) performed a survey of over 14,000 people in 48 countries around the world.

Each person was provided a questionnaire in which they were asked questions of sexual partners, one-night stands, number of sexual partners, marriage, attitudes of casual sex, and other such questions.

Schmitt found that when a country has more males than females, such as in Japan, South Korea, and China, then there is less casual sex.

However, in countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, and France, with a higher percentage of women over men, there is a much more tendency to have casual, uncommitted sex; and a much higher divorce rate when marriage does occur.

In fact, Schmitt states that men and women in the United Kingdom are the “world’s most promiscuous people.” [Howrah News Service: “UK men, women most promiscuous: Study”]

In the December 20, 2008 Sydney Morning Herald (Australia) article The balance of sexual power,” the author says, based on Schmitt’s comments, “This was particularly true, Schmitt says, of areas that have been hit hardest by some of the harshest drug laws and gang violence, meaning that many men were in prison - or dead.”
