Direct evidence found of first stowaway house mouse

Science - Biology

The molar’s shape lends evidence that the mouse originated from the northern Levantine coast (the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea).

Dr. Cucchi states that the house mouse is similar to “extant populations from eastern Mediterranean sibling species.”

That is, the species is similar to modern (extant: existing) house mice found in Syria (bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the west) and near Cyprus (an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, north of Egypt, east of Greece, and south of Turkey).

Cucchi also states, “Using modern behavioural comparisons, combined with archaeological and historical sources, it has been argued that the servicing port of Ugarit (Minet el Beida) was a likely step on the vessel's last journey.”

Ugarit is today called Ras Shamra. It is located near Latakia, Syria. In ancient times it was a large port city on the Mediterranean coast.
