If you ever needed evidence of the rise of online retail then the release of the Subaru BRZ sports car in Australia is some good data to have.

Whilst it is almost identical in feature set and looks to the Toyota 86, the Subaru commands a higher price tag (around AU$ 37K) and obviously a little more online buying cred.

With just 201 cars available through to New Year, huge online demand temporarily stalled Subaru’s website, but after it went live around 12:45 AEST, the first online customer took just 20 minutes to complete the process, from choosing accessories, completing their contract and paying their deposit.

From 12:noon on the opening day of sales earlier this month (July 16th) Subaru's website traffic initially quadrupled with the first eight orders for the sports car initiated by 12:05.

50 BRZ’s were sold in the first 1.5 hours and the rest were gone by just on a quarter to four that afternoon (15:47).  Subaru has gone on to sell double the allocation of BRZ’s online.

Now if you wish to order a BRZ it will be 2013 before you get behind the wheel of a right hand drive Australian model.
