Laser's latest multimedia eBook reader is an easy-to-use multimedia device with a great price and just a few limitations.
In the now-familiar 7" 800x480 format, this colour eBook reader supports music, video and photos as well as books.
Opening the box, we find the device itself, a USB cable and headphones, along with a tiny printed user manual; but don't worry, the folks at Laser were kind enough to include the manual via a button on the start screen. The earphone port is a standard 3.5mm audio port, so purchasers are able to use any headset or speakers of their choosing.
The EB700 comes with 200 eBooks pre-loaded, all of which might be called 'classics,' including a wide variety to suit most tastes. For instance, we have George Orwell's
Animal Farm and
1984, E M Forster's
A Passage to India and Aesop's
Fables (and another 196 more!).
Open any of these eBooks and they are presented in whatever page format the digital version was delivered. This may be a simple text layout or the page layout of the original published volume. Formats supported include EPUB, TXT, HTM and PDF. Downloaded eBooks are easily transferred to the EB700 via the supplied USB cable. The 'rotate' button will permit viewing in landscape mode.
While reading eBooks, the device has 4 levels of zoom, ranging from the full original page to perhaps just 20 very large words on the screen. The back-light is also adjustable to cope with a variety of light levels. It is not a touch screen device, relying instead on the various navigation buttons below the screen.
The image viewer supports JPG and BMP only, but can be configured to act as a digital photo frame. The issue here is that the device operates only in portrait mode - the rotate functionality does not apply to photo viewing. Users may wish to re-orient images in an image editor to permit the EB700 to sit on a desk in landscape orientation.
Probably the greatest weakness is in the video system.
