kingdomsofamalurpackSprinting around the countryside of Amalur is certainly a different experience from that of trudging around the world of Skyrim, and that is ok, despite the back-of-the-box description that may lead you to think this is a majestic RPG in line with Bethesda's opus Reckoning takes its major influences from elsewhere.

If there is one thing you can synthesize from our interview with 38 Studios Lead Designer Ian Frazier and Producer Sean Bean (no, not that Sean Bean) when talking about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning it is the attempt to stand out from the crowd.

'Then we are obviously trying many things to differentiate ourselves from all the other games that are in this space, and the big thing is our combat.  Obviously we are bias, but we believe we have not just the best combat in fantasy, but in the RPG genre as a whole.'

And it is certainly the combat that is the main differentiation point from other games sitting side by side on the store shelves.  Yes Reckoning is an RPG within a complex fantasy based world, based on 10,000 years of story line created by award winning fantasy author R. A. Salvatore, and as the tale unfolds it feels, as the 'fateless one' you are part of a much bigger saga.

Along with the grandiose story line of a land inhabited by Fae (elves), Gnomes, Man and a whole bunch of other traditional and made-up fantasy races is a colourful land that provides a pseudo sand-box environment for sprint around in.

Very much like games such as Fable, you will wind your way from quest to quest (main, side and faction based) through a landscape bordering on cartoon style and yet littered with detail, nice lighting effects and plenty of variety.

Character models are average, but in keeping with the setting, and voice acting wavers across the full spectrum of quality.  On the whole the questing side, environmental and storyline aspects of this game are on par for the genre.
