Review: LG FB164DAB Micro audio system

LG has released an all in one DVD,CD,Digital and Analogue radio micro audio system with built in one-touch recording to USB.  The FB164DAB Micro audio system is not an upgrade for your home entertainment system, but it could fill the niche in another room.

Unpacking and setting up the new micro audio system from LG is a breeze, this is not a complicated piece of audio visual equipment, a trait that may see it perfect for some home entertainment applications.

Don’t expect the FB164DAB to be a replacement, or upgrade for a fully fledged home theatre system, but for the more budget conscious among us, or as a compact entertainment set-up for the bedroom or kitchen based TV it is well suited.

The first impression aesthetics are a mixed, obviously subjective, but the shiny piano black finish divided viewers of the system.  Some recognized the look as something that would fit in with electronic trends today, with most manufacturers venturing down the ‘shiny black’ path.  An equal amount of others felt the device looked cheap because of the finish.

Once powered up, the soft aqua hue of the central hub is the most prominent eye-catcher beyond the display window above it.  On top of the box, is the DVD/CD slot, for sliding in discs vertically, likewise there is a cover that slides away to reveal a standard iPod/iPhone doc.

Illuminated with another couple of blue lights, and also positioned high on the box is the USB port.  Great for plugging in those non-Apple manufactured MP3 players, or playing files off USB attached storage.

Likewise the FB164DAB can utilise the USB port with a flick of one button to start recording from other playback sources such as FM, AM or Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio.  This works very well, and for those wanting to quickly record for a later listen to talk-back radio shenanigans.
