Rockstar has released a version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone and iPod Touch, could it come to the Wii?

Bringing the big AAA title franchise name of Grand Theft Auto to the huge hand held market has so far been a reasonable success for Rockstar Games.

Being one of the more mature titles for the Nintendo DS and also released for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Rockstar has shown it is being adventurous in this market.

Back in September last year we found out that Rockstar Games would like to push the envelope even further by announcing versions of Beaterator and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

Beaterator is already out, and this week saw GTA:CW hitting the Apple App Store at a very experimental price point of AU$12.99

Rockstar say “Every mission, rampage, stunt jump and drug deal is recreated for the 480x320 resolution screen,”

Control mechanisms were the big challenge with making both the PSP and iPhone/iPod Touch ports from the original control pad, buttons and touch screen offered by the Nintendo hand-held.

With the iPhone version Rockstar has managed to craft an effective virtual joystick that only becomes a small learning curve issue (for those ‘blessed’ with big fingers) with the two button driving interface.

Rockstar has crammed the same fulfilling amount of game-play and mature story line into the Apple device, and added IndependenceFM allowing you to call the shots on your in-game music.  Simply create a playlist named ‘gta’ in iTunes and it is like you are using the mp3 auxiliary input in each car-jacked vehicle.

One company has definitely decided that Apples devices are indeed the seventh platform of video-gaming , but is there any reason why Rockstar could not go the next step and release Chinatown Wars on the top selling Nintendo Wii?

The style would fit, the resolution would fit, the control mechanism would again be a challenge, but nothing the Rockstar folk have not contended with in the past.

The biggest hurdle for games such as these on the Nintendo Wii is perception.  Something that Sega had to contend with when they released games such as The Conduit, MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill.  But Sega are determined to bring mature gaming to the Wii platform, and others, such as CAPCOM (Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles) are behind them, no reason Rockstar Games could not get in line if the financials are viable.
