Wii Sports gave new Wii owners the chance to waggle their Wii-motes in five sports, tennis, boxing, golf, baseball and bowling and whilst Resort reincarnates two of these, it packs in an amazing amount of new and delightful content that stamps it as a worthwhile purchase.
The game opens up with a sky diving sequence that gives a great overview of the Wuhu (Woo-Hoo!) islands and virtual resort that ties in the games sports to the theme, Wii Fit joggers will recognise most of the main island which has everything from a small town to a towering volcano.
Once your Mii lands, it is time to select your sport, now up from the originals total of 5 to a full dozen choices.
Before we get into the individual sports, let’s touch on the peripheral additions to the games, first up Mii importation; the game gives you the option for Mii characters, created by people around the world, to automatically be imported into games you play as a crowd. A nice feature, that makes you check out those surround crowd members during game-play.
Secondly, Resort adds ‘Achievements’ in the form of “Stamps” for outstanding (and sometimes not so outstanding) performance within the sports.
So, on the box, Nintendo advertise Wii Sports: Resort as containing 10 new sports, meaning they have reprised two of the originals mini games. But the overhaul of both Golf and Bowling is a great example of how much depth and options have been added with this release.
Golf adds not only a bunch of new courses, but also a new level of realism to cater for the MotionPlus. A new step is required for each swing, pressing the B button to establish a ‘stance’ before addressing the ball. Golfers will also need to be mindful of their wrist movements during shots from now on.
Bowling adds a couple of new fun modes with 100 pin bowling and the spin control challenge where barriers impede the bowling lane, requiring the mastering of spin to negotiate.
This sets the tone for the rest of the games; most of the following games have multiple flavours as well as unlockable difficulty levels or new stages/courses etc. There is much more depth in each of Resort’s sports than the original game offered.
