Sparring results in points that can be allocated to a myriad of offensive or defensive skills in a text heavy RPG style building up of your fighter’s style.
Style is important in this game, some opponents prefer a ‘ground’ based wrestling bout, others will attempt to kick the spit out of you, interestingly, if they do, the developers have taken the time to model mouthguard physics separate from the two muscle bound lads in the octagon.
There is Judo styles, Thai and Kickboxing styles and a smattering of others.
The other mode on offer consists of the excellently presented Classic Fights, which benefit from lengthy video interviews and introductions leading up to the bout. But the twist here is that you must not be distracted by the obvious visual pleasantries during the bout description by Rachelle Leah as she tells you the specific winning move of the historic match.
Still if you don’t recreate history, a classic fight is still further insight into what, in my part of the world, is a mysterious sport.
Presentation is top-notch. This is no Street Fighter IV, with the actual fights showing much of what these current generation consoles are capable of.
No clipping issues, plenty of obvious “damage” on the fighters, and mostly, with only the odd frame freeze, smooth animation of the protagonists.
Because timing is everything, especially in blocks and counters, there is sometimes the un-physics like immediate halt to a powerful kick as an opponent hits the correct block button. But this is one of the most realistic fight games brought to any gaming platform to date.
Make sure you practice hard, before going online. There are obviously many fans of the real-life UFC that have done the tough yards in the gym before going on the road.
In game commentary, is fantastic, with only the rare – and still contextually accurate – repeated lines. Even having different modelled referees is a nice touch that may or may not be, but at least feels, authentic.
There are no camera blocking issues, but just remember to turn on the Stamina bar, which is off by default. Stamina is king in this game, and without the bar on-screen defeats can be confusing.
Whilst there is some roughness around the edges, UFC 2009 Undisputed is, as the title mentions, hard to find something that comes close to comparing too. It is a game that is both deep and fulfilling to fans, whilst retaining the button mashing accessibility for the more casually interested.
