I don’t have much point of reference having missed the first iteration of this game; Lights, Camera, Action and I will refrain from comparing to Buzz games past and present. So let’s take a quick look at Scene It? Box Office Smash as it stands on its own.
BOS presents a living room competition feel, with the players represented by Microsoft avatars sitting on a couch (this contrasts with Buzz’s more game show presentation – but again, this is not relevant).
There are some minor customisations that can be made to the scoring system – deductions for wrong answers – and then its time to choose a solo, short or long game. Add on the ‘continuous play’ option if you like – good for parties – and then into the quiz.
BOS provides 4 infrared connected buzzers. This gives the game up to four teams (you can link your Xbox controllers to each buzzer so that there can ultimately be four teams of two playing).
The buzzers consist of four colour choice buttons, as well as a big Buzz-in button, which doubles up as a handy directional-pad. They are light and responsive, so long as you remember they are not Blue-Tooth, so keep them pointed at the USB attached infrared receiver.
The quiz itself consists of a number of rounds plus the Final Cut.
The rounds consist of randomly chosen games – from a list of 21 – each consisting of two types of answering methods. Either a model where everybody can input an answer from the multiple choices given, or be the fastest on the buzzer, and then select an answer from a presented list.
In a fastest buzzer style game, you need to be a subsequent quick reader to get your choice of answer in before a five second expiry.
