Demigod Review – 50-foot man-castle rampage

Entertainment

Ever had one of those dreams where you are a giant, towering over your minions, stomping on the enemy and generally wreaking havoc on your way to becoming an all powerful god?  Or is that just me?

Demigod is an interesting beast, it is a game designed in attempt to appeal to a broad range of gaming tastes.

Fan of Real Time Strategy?  Well the game revolves around this facet; it is a battle of the titular Demigods – eight diverse, self absorbed powerful beings – who vie to step up a level to be the one true pantheon holder.

There are minions, grunts, a citadel to defend, points of power to take control of, as well as resource management and of course plenty of battles.  All staples of the RTS format.

Fan of Role Play Gaming?  Well Demigod provides plenty of layered character development and group dynamics.  As demigods earn experience through different tasks gaining access to individual skill trees to spend this on.

In a similar manner accumulated gold can be spent in numerous ways, at artefact shops to purchase potions, magical armour and other trinkets including icons to summon minions to accompany the demigod.

Importantly though, gold is a shared resource, so all demigods can spend the pooled coin on themselves or to upgrade the teams citadel to boost defences or team “buffs”.

This is a great way to encourage teamwork, and given that this spending occurs in real time and is also dependent on location – that is, for example, you must be next to the citadel to spend money on it – there needs to be a lot of communication or understanding of each demigods team role in order for the greater battle to succeed.

Favour points awarded for various actions are, in a similar way accumulated personally by the demigod, but can only be spent once in a match.  Getting a favour item is a balance of buying now or waiting later for a more expensive and therefore powerful boost item.
