Dawn of War II Review - Its 1987 again

Entertainment

In games, squads can gain experience, levelling up as the encounters escalate.  It is  all pretty fast and furious, unlike the turn based miniatures table-top version which requires much chin scratching, rule-book consultation and at times heated discussion over millimetre disputes.

And that is where Dawn of War II sits in the Warhammer 40K ethos, it is a further extension of what Rick Priestly and other Games Workshop luminaries created over 20 years ago.

Relic are now one of the top studios in bringing skirmish games to life on the small screen, I would argue that Dawn of War II retains much in the way of strategy, there is guidance required on the field of battle, but much of the success of each mission will be made in the tactical phase, with troop selection and load-out.

Having said that, Dawn of War II is an addictive new foundation for a franchise that will undoubtedly expand to include the rest of the WH40K races and hopefully further campaigns.  There is not much that DOW II does wrong (some pathing issues and ‘stuck’ units aside), it looks like it will be a solid foundation for the expansions to come.
