The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
In Showdown town, Banjo and Kazooie are restricted to tootling around town in a quaint little trolley car, useful for transporting vehicle parts, Jiggies and Orbs, but not much else. Once the Worlds are open however, the game’s gloves are off and any pre-made vehicle can be utilised to get around and compete in the challenges housed within each level.
Each world is beautifully detailed and coloured in bright colours, with local inhabitants wandering around, generally getting in the way. The levels are amazingly presented, with water, fire, snow and more elemental effects looking great. Some are vertigo inducing with their verticality, whilst others are just flights of whimsy (the world inside a Xbox 360 for example).
It is charming, but as B & K make their way around, from challenge to challenge it is clear that even more charm could have been injected (or destroyed, for that matter if done badly) with some voice characterisation of the characters involved. Reading endless subtitles (which sometimes disappear quite quickly) is okay, but a little atmosphere destroying in a game such as this – still at least this game does not have the issues Spyro’s latest outing is experiencing.
A good range of challenge variety is on hand here, with rewards metered out on performance, and replayability either a must or very tempting due to the reward (and online leaderboard ego pandering) mechanism. Jiggies, Musical Notes, Extra vehicle components, Trophies and Jinjo Bingo pieces (used to unlock even more goodies) are all awards for completing challenges.
Some are quick – race around and perform tasks, knock an item off an opponent vehicle, protect a character from attack or simply race. Most challenges revolve around these tried and true game mechanisms, but there is variety, charm, wit and strategy on display here.
Some are very challenging indeed, bordering on frustrating in many cases. This will have you questioning your choice of vehicle, or making tweaks to your designs to improve times or even trying completely new styles of vehicles to even just be successful in a challenge.
Once complete, the leaderboards are shown, and players can save a replay of their challenge success on the servers to download. It is at this point you realise just how cunning some Xbox 360 owners are. Downloading a top leaders replay for a particular challenge, you can see all sorts of shortcuts and – perhaps it is unkind to call them ‘cheats’, let’s call them loophole exploitations – utilised by B-K: N&B owners around the world.
Value is high with this title. Each world is vast, each challenge is replayable, tinkering in Mumbo’s workshop is addictive once you get the hang of it and there are secrets, crannies and nooks to be searched out and explored all over the game.
There is a multiplayer element in both co-op and challenge head to heads to be had. And reportedly (I haven’t tried this yet) a feature called Stop ‘N’ Swop connects B-K: N&B to the upcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade release of the original “Banjo-Kazooie”. Player’s accomplishments in the new game will be rewarded with extra content and features in the Xbox LIVE Arcade game.
Having played through Rare’s forgotten Grabbed by the Ghoulies on the original Xbox twice with my daughter, it is easy to recognise Rare’s talent for bringing charm to interactive entertainment. B-K:N&B certainly has this as well as a fantastically rendered world and great value gaming, prepare to be lost in a game for a long time with this title.
