Backup Exec 11d to Deliver Granular Recovery, Continuous Data Protection for Exchange 2007 Environments
AUSTRALIA, Sydney – 1 February 2007 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Backup Exec 11d, the leader in Windows data recovery, will support Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, thereby extending granular recovery and continuous data protection to customers migrating to the new email platform.
As with Exchange 2000 and 2003, Backup Exec 11d will redefine traditional protection of Exchange 2007 by eliminating the need for daily backups while allowing quick recovery of individual mailboxes, messages, and folders. Whether an organisation runs Exchange 2007 in a standard deployment, a local continuous replication or a clustered continuous replication configuration, Backup Exec 11d helps to ensure that Exchange 2007 data is quickly recoverable and available. However, only Backup Exec 11d provides the ability to perform granular recovery from an Exchange 2007 replica, enabling businesses to recover critical Exchange data in seconds.
Backup Exec 11d will also provide support for Exchange 2007 in a complete 64-bit environment, as well as supporting both Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) versions included with Exchange 2007.
"For many of our customers, Microsoft Exchange is a critical business application, supporting and managing a vast amount of information that must be immediately available and protected," said Pat Hanavan, vice president, Data and Systems Management Group, Symantec Corp. "As these organisations adopt the new Exchange 2007 platform, Backup Exec 11d will continue to provide them with efficient, cost-effective continuous data backup and rapid recovery capabilities to protect their messaging environments."
Continuous data protection transforms the protection of Exchange data by eliminating the need for daily full or incremental backups or even mailbox backups. Exchange data is protected all the time; a full backup is only required once a week or every other week. In addition, even without mailbox backups, Backup Exec 11d enables organisations to recover individual emails, folders, and mailboxes in seconds.
Backup Exec 11d’s innovative patent-pending Granular Recovery Technology enables the recovery of individual emails, folders, and mailboxes in seconds - without the need for separate mailbox backups. As a result, IT administrators no longer have to run multiple backups jobs to protect Exchange, which effectively cuts backup times in half or more. Granular Recovery Technology works with either continuous or traditional scheduled Exchange data protection methods. Backup Exec 11d also enables the quick recovery of components of other Microsoft applications, including SharePoint Portal Server, and Active Directory.
"The elimination of mailbox backups for Exchange is a huge win for IT. As organisations continue to look to e-mail applications as their most mission-critical application, the need for a streamlined recovery process is essential," said Lauren Whitehouse, analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "The Microsoft Exchange 2007 capability in Backup Exec 11d simplifies recovery for emails, folders, and mailboxes while enabling granular recovery in just seconds - saving time for IT administrators."
