Extreme Networks cools the data centre with 2nd generation 10GBase-T switch

Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) continues to innovate products for the data centre by addressing power consumption and operational costs. The company is now shipping a greener, more energy efficient version of its Summit® X650 10GBase-T data centre switch, a high performance 10GbE, Top-of-Rack Ethernet switch, designed for the next generation data centre, cloud computing and hosted environments.

A second generation 10 Gigabit, Top-of-Rack switch, the Summit X650-24t consumes 200W less power during operation than the first generation, to address the energy efficiency goals of data centre planners. The SummitX650 is complemented with Intel's new lower power 10GBase-T adapter that provides state-of the art interfaces to high performance servers.

Earlier this year, Extreme Networks was also the first to support copper 10 Gigabit (10GBase-T ) with the Summit® X650 Top-of-Rack data centre switch, complementing a complete 10GBase-T ecosystem, from high performance server adapters to switches.

'Power savings is critical to data centre where space, heat and bandwidth have to be optimised,' said Simon Barnard, Regional Director, Australia and New Zealand for Extreme Networks. 'Delivery of the latest generation of the Summit X650 provides excellent energy efficiency and provides customers with cost-effective 10 GbE options for standard RJ45 copper interfaces using CAT 5 and CAT 6 cabling, up to 100 metres making it a perfect fit for the data centre.'

Extreme Networks provides a high performance solution for the Data Centre market by bundling 10GBASE-T Ethernet switches and Network Interface Cards through distribution channels, resulting in a cost effective and interoperable solution for 10 gigabit over copper applications.

'10GBase-T is the driver for broader adoption of 10GbE because of its simplicity, backward compatibility with 1000Base-T, and low cost copper cabling,' said Steve Schultz, director of marketing, Intel LAN Access Division. 'We expect to see 10GBase-T on server motherboards in the not too distant future. This is essential because 10GbE is the unified networking fabric for the next generation data centres.'

The Summit X650 is designed with the same resilient and trusted ExtremeXOS® operating system and SummitStackâ„¢ stacking technology uniquely available across the Extreme Networks switch portfolio. The Summit X650 switch also supports both10GBase-T copper and SFP+ fibre, the latest small form factor transceiver technology enabling high density 10GbE network connectivity. Extreme Networks SummitStack stacking technology initially deployed to mix Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switches in the same virtual chassis is now leveraged to mix Gigabit Ethernet switches with the Summit X650 10G switches, allowing for simple and cost-effective migration to 10 Gigabit technology in the data centre.
