Sony announces PSP 2, the 3DS killer?

Opinion and Analysis

Can Sony resurrect the PlayStation Portable?  Today the electronics giant gave out details of the true successor to the PSP dubbing the PSP 2 the 'Next Generation Portable' NGP.  Will it be enough to make inroads into the hype developing around the impending Nintendo 3DS?  Well it will certainly give pause to prospective purchasers.

In March Nintendo launches the next iteration of the phenomenally selling DS, the 3DS.  At a special announcement in Tokyo Japan today Sony has attempted to steal some of Nintendo's hand-held thunder with the announcement of the PlayStation Portable 2.

This was purely an attempt to grab some consumer mind-set away from the 3DS by Sony, at the announcement no details of price or release date (other than 'towards years end 2011').

Instead Sony wheeled out the tech details for the forthcoming 'Next Generation Portable'.  The UMD disc system is now dead and buried, instead describe the PSP2's game media as 'a small flash memory based card, taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games."

The PSP 2 sports a 5 inch OLED screen at a resolution of 960 X 544.  There are two multi-touch pads (capacitive type) mounted rear and front as well as a camera for both front and rear.

There is a large Hooray! For the inclusion of a second analogue stick as well as Six-Axis motion sensing control plus accelerometer and three-axis electronic compass.

The Sony marketing machine will do well not to call the PSP 2 the PSP Phone, with all the implications of going up against the smart-phone brigade would bring down upon it.  But, the PSP 2 will be both Wi-Fi and 3G enabled.
