It is turning into a somewhat Annus Horribilis for many in the Australian video game industry, or perhaps it is just the shifting of demand that has caught many unawares. The Game Developer’s Association of Australia is calling for the submission of abstracts for the annual Game Connect Asia Pacific love in will be run in conjunction with the EB Games vendor show for a mini E3.
2010 has seen the demise of few, and the belt tightening of many other traditional video game development studios in Australia.
At the same time, many in the industry have tasted success, with companies such as – predominantly – iPhone developer Firemint continuing to produce winning products.
But with studios such as Transmission Games closing down, and others such as Krome and Melbourne House feeling the economic pinch, it is clear that the video game industry is one that exists on ever shifting tectonic and economic plates.
Which always makes the annual gathering of the industry at Game Connect Asia Pacific an interesting checkpoint for veterans as well as new-comers to the world of video-game construction.
This year’s event on the Gold Coast will coincide with Australia’s biggest bricks and mortar games outlet EB Games and its own vendor based show, the result should be a fusion of both developer, publisher and retailer thoughts about where the industry is headed.

The Game Developers’ Association of Australia today announced that the annual Game Connect Asia Pacific event scheduled will head to the Gold Coast in October. In an event that will be held simultaneously with the EB Games vendor show, Australia’s mini E3, the event will focus on the changing game development ecosystem and Australia’s future role in the global industry.CONTINUED on PAGE 2
