GCAP09: Best video game from Australia in 2009

Opinion and Analysis

Game connect Asia Pacific 2009 is a chance for the Australian video game development industry to come together, exchange ideas, support each other and of course, compete for the annual awards that GCAP announces.  This year’s winners highlight the subtle shift in video game development over the past twelve months.

The Game Connect Asia Pacific awards dinner is the annual time to announce the winners of the best games produced and developed in Australia.

This year’s winners reflect the shift towards development for mobile platforms such as the Apple iPhone as well as the increased popularity of casual games, a trend that sees interactive entertainment moving inexorably towards the mainstream.

“Congratulations to Firemint on their success at the 2009 GDAA Industry Awards. Flight Control has been a phenomenal success and has really been responsible for the creation of an entire new genre on iPhone. We're very proud that this title was developed in Australia,” said Tom Crago, President of the Game Developers’ Association of Australia.

“Congratulations, too, to all our other winners, including Puzzle Quest: Galactrix and Heroes over Europe. Now we look forward to 2010 and the next wave of games to be released by Australian developers,” he added.

One significant defining factor in this year's awards is the fact that a now defunct Australian games studio (Transmission Games) won a third of the accolades on offer.

On Page 2 is the complete list of GCAP09 award winners including the independent and student produced games coming out of the healthy educational infrastructure within Australia.
