PlayStation Home Ho-Hum

Opinion and Analysis

Not much point in heading to the Mall at the moment, the shops are shut.  But you can play chess, or dance.

The Theatre is showing trailers of SOCOM or The Watchman – along with associated posters, this is pretty neat but when stacked up against the simple ability to download trailers through Xbox LIVE Marketplace, seems like a bit too much hard work.

Of course everybody wants to hang out in the Bowling Alley.  Bowling is pretty good fun, with plenty of emotions on display.  Then there are the pool tables and arcade (Sony Demo game) machines to be enjoyed during your time at this location.

No game themed locations so far with the Beta, but later expect WarHawk, Far Cry, Uncharted and SOCOM themed areas and activities just to name a few.

So PlayStation Home, it is all about the customisation, socialisation, advertising and dancing.  All within a pretty closed Sony shop like experience, who’s loading times are tolerable (especially with the ‘find a friend’ option available).

Ultimately it will be a fancy game lobby to meet up and launch multiplayer games.  People will also be able to further extend the Sony coffers with premium design items, but will not be able to upload their own designs/items.

It is this somewhat closed approach that is a little discouraging to time investment into the PlayStation Home concept, though Sony have announced they are busily locking down more and more third party companies into providing items for the world.  In fact Sony are at pains to point out that the beta is only the icing on the Home content cake.

"PlayStation Home will be packed," said Jack Buser, Director of PlayStation Home on the PlayStation Blog " You’ll see a bunch of new multiplayer minigames on day one of open beta, and we have tons more coming…"

Some enterprising individuals have supposedly hacked the PlayStation Home beta,  with reports varying from the ability to change only local content visible to that player only (as per the (pointless!) video below) right up to the ability to upload and change PH server content, something I haven’t witnessed yet.

So there is a fair amount of work for Sony to complete before we see PH proper, in the meantime, you can always dance.
