Opinion and Analysis

As mid-December rolls closer, it is time to ponder lists. Gift shopping lists, New Year’s resolution lists and of course, best and worst of the year. So here is a list, a waffling walk through 08’s greats of the gaming world.
Played a lot of games this year, and though 2008 was not the watershed year that 2007 was, it definitely churned out a great many quality games.
Each game takes on average a minimum or around 10 hours of digitised life sucking time from ones precious moments on this Earth. As such, there are times when some major or even excellent minor titles slip through the time management gaps.
So before we get into the best of, here are the quality games of 2008 that – for various reasons - I didn’t get to look at much or at all, but probably deserve a second glance.
Far Cry 2 – Like everybody else, I drooled over the possibilities of a new outlet for the team at Crytek. And those tech videos and teaser trailers all looked fantastic; the jump from tropical island to African jungle was a tasty setting. But alas Far Cry 2 was merely a shimmering mirage tempting me from the tyranny of distance that is the open African Savannah.
Hey and while we are on Ubisoft titles, apart from the demo, missed getting a chance to take on Tom Clancy’s voice driven EndWar and the bouncy perky controls of the latest Prince of Persia.
Whilst there were plenty of real time strategy games that crossed the Radioactive IT desk, I missed games such as Sins of the Solar Empire and Red Alert 3. Sins in particular should be given a spin.
It was not a good year for Dead titles, as I failed to take out both shooters Dead Space or Left 4 Dead. Dead Space in particular was a thorn in my side, because if there ever was three quarters of a movie I wanted to relive in computer game format it was Event Horizon.
Speaking of movies saw James Bond: Quantum of Solace didn’t get to play the shoot-em-up.
Many a sports title did not make the cut this year, especially the 09 editions of Madden, FIFA and other American centric sports – except for NASCAR 09 Surprisingly.
Though the market expanded this year, with Age of Conan, Warhammer and so on being added to the MMORPG line up, the time investment is just too great for me to seriously put into. So there is a whole category of delicious gaming (in general) swept out the door.
Now we get into the real guilt trips – no Braid, no Metal Gear Solid 4 (Yes! I know), no Fallout 3 and finally no Rock Band (or Rock Band 2 for that matter, not being released in this country and all).
Also did not get to play Duke Nukem Forever, but on the upside, neither did you.
