Review: Spore – Creationists beware!

Opinion and Analysis

Moving into the subsequent Civilization Stage sees the game options develop expand.  It is still largely a RTS, but we can now design both Buildings and Vehicles, including flying contraptions.  We can utilise Religion in our goal of conquering the entire planet, and the interface scope changes allow us to traverse the globe with ease, managing what is largely a simplified Command and Conquer set of goals before we launch into space.

The Space Stage allows our creations to leave their planet shackles to explore the galaxy.  The seamless move from the surface to space travel with the flick of a mouse wheel is impressive.

The subsequent (Masters of Orion like) space faring game is the richest mini-game so far.  It is still linked back to the previous stages but takes the game to other planets and cultures.  Missions are accepted, other planets colonised, trade established and wars fought – all in the name of progress.

And that is it for Spore the game – but as Spore the sandbox there is so much more to the title.  It is the peripheral parts of the program that will give it the longevity it deserves.

Many Maxis The Sims fanatics will flock to Spore for the creative toolsets and socialisation aspects of the game.  Many will enjoy the simple thrill of producing their own race’s national anthem, or over analyse and tweak the flourish of their personal City Hall designs.

All of Spores creations can be uploaded in a Sporecast, or downloaded for in game use through the Sporpedia interface.  A nice way to introduce an element of multiplayer, given the original vision of being able to land on ‘other players’ home worlds during the game has not made it to the final product.spore2.jpg

Hard-core gamers can flash through a full Cell to Space game of Spore in a matter of hours, but exploring everything Spore has to offer will take much longer than that.  Players can pick and choose the elements of Spore that they are most fond of, and leave the rest.
Whether this, being everything to everybody quality is admirable or not is debatable, but the reality is Spore will sell like multiplying bacteria as most people will have an attraction to the game at some level.

Like The Sims and its never ceasing expansions, Spore will find many niches to inhabit.  Undoubtedly, EA and Maxis will find ways for Spore to evolve as well, drawing even more sales into the fold.
