Review: Soul Calibur IV

Opinion and Analysis

The character creation system is the strongest part of SCIV and a reason to play the game to death.

The existing roster of characters or a 'from scratch' fighter can be edited in the robust easy to use system.  Unlocked weapons, skills and statistic boosting clothing/equipment can be designed and adorned upon your paper doll ready for action.

You can take your creation online and see how she/he/it stacks up against the competition.

SCIV is certainly a classic and well constructed fighting game, full of little details that will keep you coming back for more.  The fighting system works well though matches are somewhat shorter than I would have liked (this exasperates the feeling of long load times, at least for the PS3 version).

The character creation, many unlocks and the genre busting inclusion of Star Wars characters does indeed separate SCIV from other fighting games.  Throw in the inclusion of many other fighting game staples (such as tag teaming) and the Soul Calibur franchise is not Dead on Arrival.
