Opinion and Analysis


Story mode is the weakest offering in SCIV.  Each character gets a text introduction, five levels to play through – with some beautiful, but dodgy cinematics linking some of the fighting.  At the end of the rounds, you will have – maybe – unlocked a new character or weapon (see character creation below) and be left with a somewhat hollow feeling.  If you are a fan of story driven combat, SCIV falls down here.

The Tower of Lost Souls is more of the same, yet for my money more interesting.  Select some characters and ascend or descend the tower, taking on a variety of challenges along the way.   Wherever you are equipped with multiple characters – like many other fighting games – you can tag team with your mates to let the initial fighter regain some health.

Game-play consists of traditional 3D fighting techniques with a couple of new twists.

Each fighter can be equipped with statistics changing equipment, and with location damage, this equipment can be destroyed in a spectacular way. 

Each character also maintains a Soul Gauge, This gauge is depleted if a player is overly defensive, opening up the chance of an opponent using a finishing move which will break through all defences.

Players can also level up characters, unlocking access to new weapons and skills.  These levelled up characters can be taken online as can characters created from scratch using....
