With the Wii MotionPlus, Wii Speak and Wii Music announced at E3 this year, Nintendo’s vision for the Wii is now complete. What does the future hold for Nintendo?
A recent Wall Street Journal interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gives insight into the thinking of the most innovative entertainment company currently treading the boards.
With the E3 summit announcements of Wii MotionPlus, Wii Speak and Wii Music amongst others now under their belt, Iwata believes developer Shigeru Miyamoto’s Wii vision is now done; ” Wii Music completes what Miyamoto wrote in his proposal when he came up with the idea for the Wii. He was saying that he needs to think up more ideas now.”
“Needs to think up more ideas…”? Surely, Nintendo have something up their sleeves to surprise the gaming (and wider) community further? Perhaps not when it comes to the Wii console; “Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now. We might think up some more, and we might make them if we do, but we don't have any plans to release a whole lot more.” said Iwata.
As the interview goes on, it is clear that Nintendo are even more intent on widening the definition of electronic entertainment.
Iwata points to broadening the scope of services and experiences within the portable gaming arena. To an inquiry about wireless use of the Nintendo DS for ordering food at stadium events, or getting airline information, Iwata responded; “I think we're doing significantly better than other devices that offer [similar] services. We're trying constantly to think of ways that the DS could be used more often in everyday life -- services we can offer that will make people want to take their DS with them everywhere. We need to convince all kinds of customers that they should own a DS.”
Though Iwata goes on to reassure the faithful; “We're still an entertainment company first and foremost, but the definition of videogames has changed. If we keep our view of what a videogame constitutes as broad as possible, then naturally we're going to be doing things that people might say aren't games.”
The MotionPlus peripheral announced at E3 addresses one of the biggest issues with the Wii as a gaming platform, controller accuracy. By all accounts the MotionPlus peripheral peripheral does indeed enhance the game play experience.
So it looks like the MotionPlus, more so than previous Nintendo Wii peripherals (Wii Zapper, Mario Kart Steering wheel and Balance Board) will be a compulsory purchase for the Wii fan. In fact Iwata has hinted that some future titles will need the Wii MotionPlus accessory as a pre-requisite to playing the game.
Nintendo will be reliant now, more than ever on wowing us with software for our Wii’s. Third party developers that, til now have been largely uninspiring in their Wii content have a golden opportunity to grab a large portion of the Wii install base pie, without being outshone by the next Nintendo produced wow inducing device.
