Could you “Come to the Dark Side”?

Opinion and Analysis

On the software front all the big names will be there, and the most hubbub will centre around platform exclusives.  Games like Alan Wake (Xbox 360), Little Big Planet (PS3) and so on will be put on the pedestal.

As a fanboy of a particular platform, what would it take for you to start thinking about running out and [secretly] purchasing that rival platform?  What compelling game are you thinking “Dammit! I hope that ends up coming to [insert brand name of the box under your telly] some time soon”?

Quite often it is clear that the most vehement comments are made by folks trying to justify their purchase, but in many cases, they are also the product of simple brand loyalty.

With games – especially AAA titles – increasingly hitting shelves in cross platform forms it is becoming a question of hardware specification or service offerings that differentiates our consumer choice.  But once this has been made, and the gaming budget does not stretch to multiple platforms, does it grate when console envy kicks in for that fantastic looking rival exclusive?

Is it possible that Gears of War 2 could turn a Sony fan to Xbox 360?  Should Boom Blox make us all Wii owners?  Or could the promise of PlayStation Home mean I drop any white console controller I own in favour of a SIXAXIS and a PS3?

So many questions and no answers.  I imagine that the stanch amongst you will instantly say that nothing could sway you from your beloved brand.  It is romantic in a way, normally something that you would hear from a die hard team sport follower rather than in the consumer domain.

Of course there will be many that don’t feel this brand allegiance, they already own multiple consoles, or switch brands each generation of platform, depending on the offering of the time.

For me, I couldn’t resist.  To the detriment of my wallet I have a kick ass PC for all the keyboard/mouse action, and all of the current (and *ahem* previous) generation of consoles.  Sure my social/family life has suffered as a result.  But, that is the price you pay when you join the Dark Side.
