Could you “Come to the Dark Side”?

Opinion and Analysis

Does brand loyalty cloud your vision?  With E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) on the LA horizon once more, it is possible, that within the expected slew of juicy announcements, an exclusive title pops up that makes you drool for a new gaming device.  Could E3 platform envy turn you to the Dark Side?

Look through some of the discussions that take place on iTWire stories in the Radioactive IT and Technology Lifestyle blogs.  You will see the level of passion expressed by gaming type folks.darthvader.jpg

Generally a story about console or exclusive software sales will spark a mini flame war that varies in maturity, valid arguments and accuracy.  It can be quite fun to watch and reinforces the stereotype of loyalty, sometimes known as fanboyism, though it should be a less gender specific term.

Mention anything negative, whether true or speculation about a particular gaming platform, and be prepared to weather a storm of frothing counter comments.

Beyond the turnstiles of sporting grounds it is hard to give another example of such team supporter loyalty.  Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony in particular must love seeing such allegiance to their products, almost regardless of the quality or features of said products.

Enough!  Onto the question at hand.  E3 is almost upon us, and you know that the various companies represented at the event are gearing up for big announcements.

Will Microsoft cut the price of the Xbox 360?  What will be the big E3 announcement from Nintendo? And so on.
