The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
So is cross platform competition a dead horse? Just at this time it seems to be, Microsoft are not pushing it; fair enough, it’s not something that is going to shift units of Vista or Xbox 360’s. Microsoft’s great eye is focussed elsewhere in gaming terms.
Smatterings of developers are applying the technology, to occasional titles, though I imagine it doesn’t rate high on the features list.
Sony and Nintendo are hard at work integrating their respective hand-held devices (the PlayStation Portable and DS) at various levels with some success and anticipation.
Microsoft at this point don’t have a hand-held device, but they could exploit the Xbox LIVE relationship further with Vista and beyond, and incorporate UMPC or Windows Mobile devices into the fold.
Since I have not heard otherwise from Microsoft, I assume this is ‘dead horse’ awaiting resuscitation at the right time.
As a gamer, I am yet to get excited by this concept, nothing compelling has come out of Redmond or 3rd party developers for over a year now. The dream – for what its worth - seems to have dissolved.
