There is only a couple of reasons why winning the console war is important to the consumers that purchase gaming consoles such as the Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii.  IT journo's butting horns over which platform is on the way out ultimately mean nothing, only the informed consumer can determine the fate of a multi-national electronics conglomerate.

Seems a mini war-o-words has erupted in the relatively sleepy market that is the Australian games console arena.

Between local .au technology lifestyle website Smarthouse and my own iTWire colleague Alex Zaharov-Reutt.

All over the perceived death of the Microsoft gaming platform, the Xbox 360 in this country.  It also seems that I am to blame for sparking this conflict, by picking up on an earlier Smarthouse item, reported in “The Xbox 360 is dead ”.

Alex ran with this story and quite rightly got a reaction from the local Microsoft Xbox representative, who said all the right things a PR agent should.

But do you, dear reader and electronics connoisseur care about this?  No!  You fall into one of three categories.

1- Those that care not at all about the fate of mere gaming machines, skim read articles such as this and then go back to the dual finger interface of your latest iPhone.

2- Those that have already ventured into the next-gen gaming arena, chosen a product and now read articles such as these to confirm you have made the right choice.  Sometimes joining the 'flame-wars' to defend the piece of plastic you spent your hard earned upon.  Group 2 are the passionate ones, and I salute you.  Not with a crappy Kevin Rudd salute either, a proper 'well done mate' enthusiastic one.

3- Then there are those that are still collating information about which way to jump in the next-gen wars.  Gathering data, analysing many sources, cross checking with your own life choices and expected future concerns, trying to decide where best to take those mattress flattened wad of bank notes to maximise modern man's yearning for tech-fulfilment.
