The SIMS on the cinema screen? You have to be kidding!

Opinion and Analysis

Plans are afoot to bring the high selling gaming franchise to the big screen, now I have heard of some dud film ideas in the past, but this must be close to the worst ever.

According to Variety.Com, 20th Century Fox have acquired the rights to produce a feature film based on the Electronic Arts gaming simulation/phenomenon “The SIMS”

That’s right, a film about a game about everyday life.  I can see the trailer now: Will Ralph make it to the toilet in time? Can Janice free herself from a room with no door or windows? What are the chances the audience can sit through the entire “The SIMS – The Movie”

Without hint of tongue-in-cheek, Variety go on to mention that a project has been started by Fox-based John Davis.  Davis is credited (?!) with recent projects including “Norbit”, “when A Stranger Calls,” and “Eragon”

Meanwhile, in what must be the easiest job description in Hollywood, Bryan Lynch has been tasked with the coming up with the [still under wraps] script.  Steve Asbell is overseeing the project for Fox with SIMS Studio head Rod Humble managing the creative property for Electronic Arts

"'The SIMS has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," said Humble. "Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling."

Oh yeah, I can imagine, that is the problem.

Sometimes you have to wonder who is turning the cranks at the movie idea factory, just because a game franchise has sole 85 million copies, does not mean it will translate to the non-interactive medium of the silver screen.  Bring on “Frogger – The Movie”.
