Review: God of War II - bloodthirsty swansong to PS2

Opinion and Analysis

The flying sequences on board the winged steed Pegusus, are a bit ho-hum once the repetition of battling air-borne enemies kicks in.  Luckily there are only two sequences of this and they occur quite early in your 15-hour quest.

Otherwise this is familiar territory for veteran God-o-warriors, Kratos acquires new weapons and moves, but as per the original, you are better off powering up your Blades of Athena (the starting weapon) and exploring the magical powers as they come your way.

This time around though, there are more boss style battles.  Greek mythology has a bunch to throw at you, from Perseus, Icurus right up to Zeus himself, with many a mythical beast to overcome in the meantime.  Once again the majority of these are dispatched by beating them down, until you play the Simon Says mini game of button pushing to finish the deed.

A marked improvement in the game is the puzzles thrown your way.  Kratos must use all of his Godly knoggin to solve the conundrums that block his path.  Utilising the ability to slow time, and Icurus wings will help here, but generally it is the use of grey matter that will win the day.

Puzzle wise God of War II is one of a rare breed that doesn't get bogged down, but provides a challenge worthy of a moments thought without altering the pace of the action.

It is this combination of gore, smarts, pace and presentation that should ensure God of War II goes down in the great 'book of games lore' as a masterpiece of its age.  A worthy swansong to a magnificent gaming platform, and a worthy addition to any PlayStation 3 owners collection.
