PS3 racks up AU$33 Million in sales

Opinion and Analysis

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia have announced today official PS3 sales figure for the Australian market.

SCEA have given iTWire a press release with the following Gfk data on PS3 and PS2 sales, they also include a top 10 game sales list, which if true, is a remarkable achievement for Sony.

Quoting Gfk’s Daniel Morse from the release; “Our data revealed that in a matter of just ten days the PLAYSTATION 3 created a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in Australia. This spending continued into the second week of trading, resulting in sales of 27,083 PLAYSTATION 3 consoles in just ten days.”

Managing Director of SCEA Michael Ephraim was also soon to comment, with an emphasis on Sony’s stock planning that has ensured there was little in the way of “sold out” signs for the PS3 during the launch; “Following a great launch for the PS3 across the country, it’s very satisfying for us to see that our close planning with retail and channel partners has ensured that all consumers wanting to get their hands on a PS3,” Ephraim said.

The aging PS2 platform reportedly sold close to 8000 units for the weeks commencing March 19 and March 26.

Now for the surprising part of this news; the games sales chart, remember, this is as quoted in the Sony release, but if true looks like a remarkable achievement in today’s world of Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and The Sims.

"In addition to the positive hardware results, GfK data from the launch week of PLAYSTATION 3 (w/c 19 March) ranked SCE Australia’s first party software titles, Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™ and FORMULA ONE™ CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION as the three highest selling games. ” In the week of launch, PS3 games dominated GfK sales charts consuming nine out of the top ten places (console and handheld). The remaining chart item was also a PlayStation® product, Final Fantasy XII on PlayStation®2,” stated Mr Morse.
